Caffeine

What is caffeine in skincare?

Caffeine is a methylxanthine alkaloid extracted from coffee beans, tea leaves and cacao. Applied topically it is a vasoconstrictor – it narrows small blood vessels – and it penetrates the skin readily because it is soluble in both water and oil.

It is also a respectable antioxidant. Reviews of its cosmetic and protective roles cover free-radical scavenging, UV-damage mitigation and effects on skin microcirculation.

What skin concerns does caffeine treat?

Its best-known use is the eye area, where vasoconstriction reduces puffiness and can lighten the bluish cast of dark circles caused by pooled blood. Results are real but temporary, lasting hours rather than days.

It is also used in body products for the temporary smoothing of cellulite by encouraging fat breakdown and reducing fluid retention, and its antioxidant activity supports broader anti-ageing routines.

What ingredients are best paired with caffeine?

In eye products it works well with peptides for firmness, niacinamide for pigmentation in the under-eye area, and hyaluronic acid for hydration – dehydrated under-eyes look darker regardless of circulation.

For body use it is paired with retinol and hydrating oils. Caffeine is non-irritating and combines safely with almost every active, so it is easy to add to an existing routine. Take our Skin Quiz.

Pigmentation

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to any change in the colour of the skin caused by melanin. Hyperpigmentation – the common form – means patches darker than your natural tone, including sun spots, melasma, freckles and the marks left behind after acne or injury.

Melanin is produced by melanocytes in the lower epidermis and handed to surrounding skin cells. When that process is over-stimulated or unevenly distributed, the result is a visible patch rather than an even tone.

What causes pigmentation?

Ultraviolet exposure is the single largest trigger, because UV directly activates melanin production as a protective response. Inflammation is the second: acne, eczema, friction, waxing, burns or harsh procedures can all leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is more common and longer-lasting in deeper skin tones.

Hormonal change, certain medications, heat and genetics complete the picture. Without daily sun protection, treated pigment reliably returns.

What ingredients are best for pigmentation?

The most effective topicals work at different points of melanin production: vitamin C and niacinamide, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, kojic acid and liquorice root extract.

Retinoids and gentle AHAs speed up turnover so pigmented cells clear faster. But broad-spectrum SPF worn daily is the ingredient that decides whether any of it holds – without it, results reverse within weeks. Take our Skin Quiz.
