Vitamin A

What is vitamin A in skincare?

Vitamin A is the parent of the entire retinoid family. In skincare it appears in several forms of increasing strength: retinyl esters, retinol, retinaldehyde, and prescription retinoic acid (tretinoin).

Every form except retinoic acid must be converted by the skin before it can act – each conversion step costs potency, which is why retinyl palmitate is mild and tretinoin is powerful. Vitamin A regulates how skin cells mature, turn over and produce collagen.

What skin concerns does vitamin A treat?

It is the most versatile active in dermatology: fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, uneven tone and pigmentation, enlarged pores, rough texture, and acne at every severity.

Because it works at the level of cell behaviour rather than the surface, results are gradual and cumulative – expect twelve weeks before meaningful change, and continued improvement for a year or more.

What ingredients are best paired with vitamin A?

Pair it with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, squalane and panthenol to absorb the dryness and flaking of the adjustment period. Introduce it two nights a week and build up.

Use it at night only, and wear broad-spectrum SPF daily – vitamin A increases photosensitivity and is degraded by light. Avoid combining it with AHAs, BHAs or benzoyl peroxide in the same step, and avoid retinoids entirely during pregnancy. Take our Skin Quiz.

What are fine lines?

Fine lines are the earliest visible sign of skin ageing: shallow creases that appear where skin is thinnest and most expressive – around the eyes, across the forehead, and at the corners of the mouth.

They differ from established wrinkles in that they are often still dynamic, showing mainly when you smile or squint, and are frequently worsened by dehydration. That makes them the most responsive stage to treat.

What causes fine lines?

Intrinsic ageing does part of the work: collagen production falls by roughly one per cent a year from the mid-twenties, elastin degrades, and the dermal matrix thins so skin no longer springs back.

The larger share is external. Ultraviolet exposure accounts for the majority of visible facial ageing, and pollution, smoking, poor sleep, sugar-driven glycation and repeated facial movement all accelerate it. Dehydration makes existing lines look deeper than they are.

What ingredients are best for fine lines?

Retinol and prescription retinoids have the strongest evidence for stimulating collagen and smoothing texture. Vitamin C protects against free-radical damage while supporting collagen synthesis, and peptides signal the skin to rebuild.

Pair those with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for immediate plumping and barrier support, niacinamide for tone, gentle AHAs for surface renewal, and coenzyme Q10 as an antioxidant. Daily broad-spectrum SPF protects everything else you are doing. Take our Skin Quiz.

These are my before and after photos using my routine, including Y'OUR and rotating 4 silk pillowcases every 6 nights. I’m wearing foundation in both, but it barely helped in the first photo. Now my skin looks visibly smoother.
