What is eucalyptus in skincare?

Eucalyptus oil is distilled from the leaves of eucalyptus trees, most commonly Eucalyptus globulus. Its dominant constituent is 1,8-cineole, also called eucalyptol, which produces both its sharp camphoraceous scent and its antimicrobial effect.

It is far better known in respiratory products than in skincare, and where it does appear in topicals it is usually at low concentrations for scent and a cooling sensation. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity is documented but it is a potent essential oil.

What skin concerns does eucalyptus treat?

Its antiseptic properties make it useful in products for minor cuts, grazes and insect bites, and it appears in some formulations for cold sores, athlete’s foot and body acne.

For facial skincare the picture is less favourable. Eucalyptus is highly volatile and a recognised sensitiser, it can trigger rosacea flares, and near the eyes it causes stinging and irritation. It should never be used undiluted or ingested.

What ingredients are best paired with eucalyptus?

If used, dilute it heavily in a carrier oil such as olive, jojoba or sweet almond, and keep it to body applications rather than the face.

For the facial concerns eucalyptus is sometimes reached for – congestion, acne, inflammation – salicylic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid and tea tree oil are better supported and far less likely to irritate. Patch test before any use. Take our Skin Quiz.

What are fine lines?

Fine lines are the earliest visible sign of skin ageing: shallow creases that appear where skin is thinnest and most expressive – around the eyes, across the forehead, and at the corners of the mouth.

They differ from established wrinkles in that they are often still dynamic, showing mainly when you smile or squint, and are frequently worsened by dehydration. That makes them the most responsive stage to treat.

What causes fine lines?

Intrinsic ageing does part of the work: collagen production falls by roughly one per cent a year from the mid-twenties, elastin degrades, and the dermal matrix thins so skin no longer springs back.

The larger share is external. Ultraviolet exposure accounts for the majority of visible facial ageing, and pollution, smoking, poor sleep, sugar-driven glycation and repeated facial movement all accelerate it. Dehydration makes existing lines look deeper than they are.

What ingredients are best for fine lines?

Retinol and prescription retinoids have the strongest evidence for stimulating collagen and smoothing texture. Vitamin C protects against free-radical damage while supporting collagen synthesis, and peptides signal the skin to rebuild.

Pair those with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for immediate plumping and barrier support, niacinamide for tone, gentle AHAs for surface renewal, and coenzyme Q10 as an antioxidant. Daily broad-spectrum SPF protects everything else you are doing. Take our Skin Quiz.

These are my before and after photos using my routine, including Y'OUR and rotating 4 silk pillowcases every 6 nights. I’m wearing foundation in both, but it barely helped in the first photo. Now my skin looks visibly smoother.
