Hyaluronic acid

What is hyaluronic acid in skincare?

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in skin, joints and connective tissue. It is a humectant of remarkable capacity, able to hold many times its own weight in water, which is why it sits in the hydrating step of almost every modern routine.

Molecular weight determines behaviour: high-molecular-weight HA forms a moisture-holding film on the surface, while low-molecular-weight fragments penetrate further for hydration in the deeper epidermis. Good formulas blend several weights.

What skin concerns does hyaluronic acid treat?

It addresses dehydration in any skin type, including oily and acne-prone skin that cannot tolerate heavy oils. Hydrated skin cells sit plumper against one another, which immediately softens the look of fine lines and improves how the face reflects light.

It also supports barrier function and wound healing, and it makes stronger actives – retinoids, acids – far more tolerable by keeping the skin comfortable alongside them.

What ingredients are best paired with hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid pulls water in but cannot hold it there alone, so always seal it with an occlusive or emollient: ceramides, squalane, shea butter or a simple moisturiser applied straight after.

It layers well with almost everything – vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids, peptides and AHAs. Apply it to damp skin, and in a very dry climate keep a moisturiser over the top, or it can draw moisture out of the skin rather than into it. Take our Skin Quiz.

What is bumpy skin?

Bumpy skin is a texture problem rather than a single condition. It covers the rough, uneven surface you can feel more than see – most often keratosis pilaris (small hard bumps on the upper arms, thighs and cheeks), closed comedones, milia, or simple build-up of dead cells on the surface.

Keratosis pilaris in particular affects a large share of the population and is harmless, but it makes skin feel like sandpaper and can be stubborn to smooth out.

What causes bumpy skin?

Most bumpy texture comes from keratin plugging the follicle. When dead cells fail to shed cleanly, they collect at the pore opening and form a firm bump – a process closely linked to a weakened permeability barrier and low skin hydration.

Genetics, dry skin, cold weather, eczema and a history of over-scrubbing all make it worse. Aggressive physical exfoliation tends to backfire, inflaming the follicle and thickening the plug.

What ingredients are best for bumpy skin?

Chemical exfoliation works far better than scrubbing. Salicylic acid clears inside the follicle, lactic and glycolic acid loosen surface build-up, and urea both exfoliates and hydrates.

Retinoids normalise how skin sheds over time, while ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid keep the barrier strong so the plugs stop reforming. Consistency matters more than strength here. Take our Skin Quiz to work out which exfoliant your skin can tolerate.

My skin is definitely a lot smoother. Most importantly, I noticed that my laugh line is not as prominent. My makeup does not break as fast as it used to. I'm definitely happy about that.

I don't like feeling like I have a lot on my skin, but these products absorb so quickly and don’t leave any oily feel. After the first week, I noticed my skin texture evening out and everything just feels really smooth.
