What is baking soda in skincare?

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a fine alkaline powder used in cooking, cleaning and antacids. Its skincare appeal comes from two properties: it is mildly abrasive, and it neutralises acid.

The second is the problem. Baking soda has a pH around 9, while healthy skin sits at roughly pH 4.7 to 5.75. That acidity is not incidental – it keeps barrier-repair enzymes working, holds the microbiome in balance and keeps pathogens out.

What skin concerns does baking soda treat?

It is used in home remedies as a scrub, a spot treatment and an exfoliant, and it does physically slough off surface cells while temporarily absorbing oil.

The cost outweighs it. Applying an alkaline powder strips the acid mantle, and research on cleansing consistently shows alkaline products impair barrier function and slow its recovery. The usual outcome is tightness, redness, rebound oil and more breakouts – the opposite of what it was used for.

What ingredients are best paired with baking soda?

Nothing, on the face. Its one defensible skincare use is neutralising an overly acidic DIY mixture before it touches skin, and even that is a reason to buy a properly formulated product instead.

For gentle exfoliation use lactic acid or a PHA; for oil and congestion use salicylic acid or clay; for blemishes use benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid. All work with the skin’s pH rather than against it. Take our Skin Quiz.

What are fine lines?

Fine lines are the earliest visible sign of skin ageing: shallow creases that appear where skin is thinnest and most expressive – around the eyes, across the forehead, and at the corners of the mouth.

They differ from established wrinkles in that they are often still dynamic, showing mainly when you smile or squint, and are frequently worsened by dehydration. That makes them the most responsive stage to treat.

What causes fine lines?

Intrinsic ageing does part of the work: collagen production falls by roughly one per cent a year from the mid-twenties, elastin degrades, and the dermal matrix thins so skin no longer springs back.

The larger share is external. Ultraviolet exposure accounts for the majority of visible facial ageing, and pollution, smoking, poor sleep, sugar-driven glycation and repeated facial movement all accelerate it. Dehydration makes existing lines look deeper than they are.

What ingredients are best for fine lines?

Retinol and prescription retinoids have the strongest evidence for stimulating collagen and smoothing texture. Vitamin C protects against free-radical damage while supporting collagen synthesis, and peptides signal the skin to rebuild.

Pair those with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for immediate plumping and barrier support, niacinamide for tone, gentle AHAs for surface renewal, and coenzyme Q10 as an antioxidant. Daily broad-spectrum SPF protects everything else you are doing. Take our Skin Quiz.

These are my before and after photos using my routine, including Y'OUR and rotating 4 silk pillowcases every 6 nights. I’m wearing foundation in both, but it barely helped in the first photo. Now my skin looks visibly smoother.
