Ethylhexyl palmitate

What is ethylhexyl palmitate in skincare?

Ethylhexyl palmitate, sometimes listed as octyl palmitate, is an ester of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol and palmitic acid. It is a clear, very light liquid used as an emollient, a solvent and a texture agent.

It is particularly common in sunscreens and makeup, where it dissolves UV filters and pigments and gives them an elegant, dry-touch finish. It is also used to replace mineral oil in formulations aiming for a lighter skin feel.

What skin concerns does ethylhexyl palmitate treat?

It softens the skin surface and slows water loss, giving a smooth, conditioned finish without greasiness. Its main role, though, is making other things work – keeping sunscreen filters evenly dispersed so the stated SPF is actually delivered.

Like its close relative isopropyl palmitate it scores poorly on comedogenicity testing. For acne-prone skin, a sunscreen or foundation built around it is a plausible cause of persistent small congestion around the cheeks and forehead.

What ingredients are best paired with ethylhexyl palmitate?

In dry or normal skin it sits well with ceramides, glycerin, squalane and shea butter, adding slip without weight.

If you are breakout-prone, look for sunscreens and bases that use squalane, caprylic/capric triglyceride or silicone-based esters instead. The finish is similar and the congestion risk is considerably lower. Take our Skin Quiz.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are permanent folds and creases in the skin. They begin as dynamic lines that appear only with expression, then set into static lines visible at rest once the underlying support structure can no longer push them back out.

They form first where skin is thin and movement is constant: crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and nasolabial folds. Deeper folds also reflect loss of fat and bone volume, not just skin change.

What causes wrinkles?

Internally, collagen and elastin production declines steadily from the mid-twenties and the dermal matrix thins, so skin loses the scaffolding that keeps it smooth.

Externally, ultraviolet radiation does most of the damage – it activates enzymes that break down collagen and degrades elastic fibres. Smoking, pollution, sugar-driven glycation, poor sleep, sleeping position and repeated facial movement all accelerate the process.

What ingredients are best for wrinkles?

Retinoids have the deepest evidence base for stimulating collagen and measurably reducing wrinkle depth over six to twelve months. Vitamin C supports synthesis while neutralising the free radicals that break it down, and peptides signal repair.

Round it out with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for hydration and barrier strength, niacinamide for elasticity and tone, and AHAs for surface renewal. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is the most effective anti-wrinkle product there is. Take our Skin Quiz.

Every morning I would wake up and my skin still felt so hydrated, so plumped and so youthful. The night cream and the day cream are my favorite products that were included in my skincare regimen. I really really REALLY love these two for my oily skin.

The cleanser has a spa like scent and didn't feel stripping at all. I like how the night cream dispenses just the right amount so there is no waste. My wrinkles are slightly better, but i think it helped prevent breakouts.
