Phenoxyethanol

What is phenoxyethanol in skincare?

Phenoxyethanol is a glycol ether used as a broad-spectrum preservative. It occurs naturally in green tea and chicory, though the cosmetic grade is synthesised for purity.

Its job is unglamorous but essential: any product containing water will grow bacteria, yeast and mould without one. Phenoxyethanol became the default after parabens fell out of consumer favour, and it now appears in a large share of skincare on the market, capped at 1% in most jurisdictions.

What skin concerns does phenoxyethanol treat?

None – it is not an active. It protects the product rather than the skin, and in doing so protects you from applying a contaminated formula to your face, which is a real infection and irritation risk.

Its safety has been examined repeatedly. A safety review of phenoxyethanol as a cosmetic preservative and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety opinion both conclude it is safe at the permitted concentration. Allergic contact dermatitis happens but is uncommon.

What ingredients are best paired with phenoxyethanol?

It is usually combined with ethylhexylglycerin, caprylyl glycol or organic acids, which boost its activity and let formulators use less of it.

You do not choose products for their preservative, but it is worth knowing that unpreserved or self-preserving formulas are not automatically safer – they spoil faster and carry their own risk. If you react to it, patch testing with a dermatologist will confirm it before you rule out half the market. Take our Skin Quiz.

Melasma

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common form of acquired hyperpigmentation that appears as symmetrical brown or greyish-brown patches, most often across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and jawline. It develops when melanocytes – the pigment-producing cells in the skin – become overactive and deposit excess melanin into the epidermis, the dermis, or both.

It is far more common in women and in medium to deeper skin tones, and it behaves as a chronic, relapsing condition rather than a one-off mark – which is why management matters as much as treatment.

What causes melasma?

Three triggers dominate: ultraviolet and visible light exposure, hormonal change (pregnancy, oral contraceptives and hormone therapy – hence its nickname, the mask of pregnancy), and genetic predisposition.

Heat, visible light from sunlight and screens, inflammation from harsh products or aggressive procedures, and certain medications all make existing patches worse. Because the triggers are ongoing, melasma typically fades and returns rather than clearing permanently.

What ingredients are best for melasma?

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable, and a tinted mineral SPF containing iron oxides is best because it also screens the visible light that drives pigment production.

On top of that, the most evidence-backed actives are tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, liquorice root extract, retinoids and gentle alpha-hydroxy acids. Avoid harsh scrubs and strong heat, both of which can rebound the pigment. Take our Skin Quiz to build a routine around your skin tone and triggers.
